Support Assistant - Building Inspections

Whangarei District Council

About us

Here at Whangarei District Council, we take genuine pride in having one of New Zealand's most welcoming and supportive work environments. Our organisation is small enough for independent work to be valued, and big enough to make an impact within our community and we're always on the lookout for community minded, dedicated individuals who get satisfaction from knowing the work they do really makes a difference.

About the role

Your primary focus in this role is to coordinate the booking of building inspections which happen throughout the lifecycle of a build. Our dedicated team of four work cohesively with answering incoming calls to book the times in our mobility calendar(s).

We have nine building inspectors in our team, who complete inspections throughout the district, and they will also call through for your support and guidance from time to time.

Outside of these bookings, you will see yourself completing other administrative duties including the organisation of incoming mail, in relation to the inspections, and achieving code of compliance. We have lots of different systems we use, and well-established processes, but each inspection brings its own nuances, so being openminded and flexible would help to your success.

About you
We are a small support team and we are looking for someone who gels well with the others, works hard and takes pride in the work they do. If you have prior building knowledge, this may set you apart, but is not a mandatory prerequisite.

To be successful you will:

  • Enjoy being on the phone for large portions of the day in a fast-paced environment,
  • Have the ability to multitask and jump between tasks throughout your day,
  • Be focused on learning from our audited procedure manuals with participation in updating/improving processes as required,
  • Bring strong communication skills, both verbal and written,
  • Computer literate,
  • Experience filing and working within complex databases,
  • Experience managing your own workload and prioritising to achieve expected outcomes,
  • Local geography knowledge would be desirable.
