Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

As Manager Arts and Heritage, you will lead the strategic direction and operational delivery of arts and heritage services across the Whakatāne District. This includes stewardship of the Council's gallery and heritage collections, enabling community access and engagement, and embedding bicultural practice. You'll guide a talented team, foster meaningful partnerships with iwi and the arts sector, and deliver high-quality exhibitions and programmes that reflect our community's rich culture and heritage.

You are a passionate leader with significant experience in heritage, museum, or gallery settings. Your strong strategic planning, team leadership, and relationship management skills are matched by a deep commitment to bicultural practice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in museum studies, heritage management, or a related field (postgraduate preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior role within museums, galleries, or heritage
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to build capability and foster a positive team culture
  • Deep understanding of bicultural practice and demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Strong relationship management and communication skills, including experience engaging with iwi and cultural stakeholders
  • Expertise in collection care, exhibition development, and public programming
  • High-level organisational, analytical, and financial management skills
  • Confident, collaborative, and culturally competent professional with a passion for arts and heritage.
