Kaipara District Council

Join our Communications team and make a real impact across Kaipara.

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a variety of projects across Council and help shape how we inform and engage with our communities. You'll be part of a supportive, agile team delivering content and campaigns that reflect the character of our district and the values we stand for.

  • Join an organisation committed to creating positive outcomes for communities across the district
  • Experience a collaborative team culture with supportive leadership and a shared commitment to meaningful work
  • This is a permanent, full-time role based in Mangawhai or Dargaville, with work from home options

This presents an opportunity to bring your strategic thinking, writing skills and digital know-how to a role that's all about clear, purposeful communication.

About the role

As our new Communications Advisor, you'll focus on delivering high-quality internal and external communications that support Council's strategic direction. You'll work closely with teams across the organisation, providing advice, planning content, and ensuring key messages reach the right audiences.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement strategic communications plans and material that support our policies, initiatives, and services, ensuring messages are consistent and audience-focused
  • Create engaging written and digital content across multiple platforms, including web, social media, newsletters, and publications
  • Provide communications advice and support to internal teams and stakeholders, partnering on innovative campaigns and community engagement initiatives
  • Support media relations, including drafting press releases and responses, coordinating interviews, monitoring key issues, risks, and opportunities
  • Uphold Council's reputation, ensuring communications are accurate, timely, and reflective of our values and commitments
  • Monitor and report on communications performance, using analytics and feedback for continual improvement
  • Contribute to crisis and emergency communications planning and execution, helping ensure clear, coordinated messaging during unexpected events

About you

You're a confident communicator with a sharp eye for detail and a knack for turning complex information into clear, accessible content. You enjoy a fast-paced environment and can easily adapt your approach to suit different audiences and channels.

We're looking for someone with:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in communications or a related field
  • Proven experience in a communications, media, or marketing role
  • Strong writing and editing skills across different channels
  • Well-versed with digital communication platforms and tools
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori and a commitment to meaningful engagement

What's on offer:

At Kaipara District Council, we foster a supportive, inclusive, and forward-thinking team environment. We also offer:

  • Flexible work arrangements and a range of employee wellbeing initiatives.
  • A commitment to your growth and development, with access to ongoing training and development opportunities.
  • One paid volunteer day per year to give back to the Kaipara community.
  • Staff health insurance, banking, and retail discounts.
  • Free EAP services and a focus on your overall health and wellbeing.
  • 5 weeks of annual leave after 5 years of service.
  • Fruit and espresso in the office.

About us:

At Kaipara District Council, we're more than just a workplace - we're a passionate team committed to creating a vibrant, inclusive, and healthy community where people love to live, work, and play. We're guided by the values of mahi tahi (teamwork), mana (integrity), pono (trust), whakaute (respect), and mahia te mahi (make it happen), which shape everything we do.
