Team Leader Water Resources

Environment Southland

Lead the Science Behind Southland's Most Vital Resource Water.

Ready to take the lead on regional water science and make a lasting environmental impact?

At Environment Southland, we're responsible for managing the region's natural resources in partnership with our community and mana whenua. Following a recent organisational redesign, we're strengthening our scientific leadership, and now we're looking for a highly experienced Team Leader - Water Resources to guide one of our most essential science teams.

From Stewart Island to Fiordland, Southland's water systems are as complex as they are precious. Your leadership will ensure these natural assets are studied, protected, and sustainably managed for generations to come.

About the role

As our Team Leader - Water Resources, you'll play a key role in driving the success of our Science Investigations and Operations Team. You'll lead a group of passionate scientists and technicians, working together on the planning, research, and management of Southland's water resources including overseeing our regional flood warning network.

In this senior role, you'll take ownership of a diverse portfolio of water-related projects, ensuring they align with environmental regulations, support sustainability goals, and meet our broader organisational objectives. You'll bring both technical expertise and strategic insight, using data and research to inform critical decision-making across the region.

Just as importantly, you'll help grow and guide your team — providing mentorship, encouraging innovation, and supporting their ongoing professional development as they tackle some of Southland's most important environmental challenges.

What you'll bring

  • MSc or PhD in environmental science, hydrology, or related discipline
  • 9+ years' experience in water science and environmental management
  • Proven leadership skills, with experience managing and developing people
  • Strong analytical and communication skills - you translate data into action

Why join us?
