Waimate District Council

This isn't a typical Health & Safety role—and in Waimate, opportunities like this don't come around often.

Waimate District Council is looking for a confident, experienced professional to lead our health, safety, and wellbeing strategy. As a dedicated one-person team, you'll be the driving force behind a safer, healthier workplace—developing systems, shaping culture, and making a meaningful impact across every part of Council.

About the role:

The successful applicant will manage health, safety, and wellbeing across the organisation and in some areas, start from scratch. A major focus will be building robust systems for the evolving Waters Business Unit. This work will set the benchmark for compliance, drive continuous improvement, and embed a culture where safety and wellbeing come first.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the implementation of the H&S management system and policies
  • Acting as the trusted advisor for all matters relating to health, safety, and wellbeing
  • Developing practical guidance and delivering training that sticks
  • Supporting investigations and ensuring timely, accurate reporting
  • Driving continuous improvement and embedding a safety-first culture
  • Engaging with all areas of Council—from field staff to senior leadership
  • Building strong relationships with WorkSafe and industry peers
  • Ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

What the successful applicant will bring:

  • A confident, proactive approach to health, safety, and wellbeing
  • A collaborative mindset and practical approach to risk management, compliance, and wellbeing
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a health, safety, and wellbeing role
  • Strong understanding of NZ H&S legislation and best practice
  • Ability to work independently and influence at all levels
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and reporting skills
  • A pragmatic, solutions-focused mindset
  • Adaptability and forward-thinking to thrive in a changing environment as the organisation evolves
  • Health and safety qualification (preferred)
  • Full NZ driver licence and legal right to work in NZ
