Emergency Management Advisor

About the role:
Our Emergency Management team works closely with our communities to ensure Selwyn is ready for, resilient to, able to respond to, and recover from emergencies such as earthquakes, floods and fires.
This is a full-time role, with participation in an on-call roster (approximately one weekend in four) and availability during emergency responses.
- Our CDEM Team work collaboratively across Council, with other Territorial Authorities, Emergency Services, Ngai Tahu and other stakeholders so strong communication and collaboration skills are paramount.
- As an Emergency Management Advisor, you'll provide specialist advice and operational support across the full emergency management cycle
- You'll contribute to planning and preparedness activities, support community resilience, and play a key role in emergency responses when events occur
About you:
You're someone who passionate about our community, is self-motivated, remains composed when it matters most and can balance planning, people and operational demands. You communicate clearly, enjoy working collaboratively, and are motivated by making a real difference in your community.
You will also have:
- Current knowledge of CDEM legislation within NZ
- At least 3 years' experience in emergency management or a similar field
- Contribute to civil defence and emergency management policy, plans and standard operating procedures, ensuring they are current, tested and fit for purpose
- Support operational readiness, including training, exercises, debriefs and emergency response planning
- Be an active member of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) team and respond to emergencies as required
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key partners including NEMA, Canterbury CDEM Group, emergency services, iwi, neighbouring councils and community organisations
