General Manager - Strategy and Democracy

Whangarei District Council

Whangārei District Council is seeking an energetic, experienced and innovative leader for our General Manager - Strategy and Democracy. This is a pivotal role in the organisation - setting direction, developing our people, and facilitating performance to deliver the best results for the Whangārei District.

As a member of the Strategic Leadership Team, who work together to implement the strategies and policies of the Council, this role reports directly to the Chief Executive and is specifically responsible for leading the corporate planning and long term plan processes, strategic planning for the district, Māori relations, democracy and Elected Member support, and risk. Each role in the Strategic Leadership Team has a focus on the future and is tasked with ensuring that our long- and short-term objectives are met. Exceptional people skills are a must for these roles to collaboratively shape and influence our people in meeting our organisational objectives. The strategic leadership portfolios require proactive leadership, sound judgement and a strong commitment to the organisation and community as a whole.

We're looking for a confident and experienced professional to step into this dynamic, fast-paced role where adaptability and clear decision-making are key. Ideally, you'll bring strong project management expertise, with programme management experience being a bonus. An understanding of Te Ao Māori and responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi is needed, along with the ability to translate these principles into practical action. You will be involved with navigating changes within local government and its legislation and working with central government agencies. You'll be comfortable navigating complexity, balancing competing priorities, and leading with confidence.

Along with strategic leadership experience and strong interpersonal abilities, you will bring perspective, influence, and transformative expertise.
