Invercargill City Council's Museum and Heritage Services team is seeking an experienced Archivist to play a key role in the care, management, and access of the archival, photographic, and documentary collections of Te Kupeka Tiaki Taoka Southern Regional Collections Trust. This role sits at the core of professional museum and archival practice and contributes directly to the development and delivery of arts, culture and heritage services in Invercargill and Southland.

Working closely with museum colleagues, mana whenua, community partners, and researchers, you will ensure collections are managed to best-practice standards and are accessible to support exhibitions, research, education, and public connection—now and into the future.

The hours of work for this position is 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Managing the care, development, and documentation of archival and photographic collections in line with professional standards and legislation
  • Providing specialist archival advice on collection policies, procedures, and best practice
  • Managing access, research, and information requests for physical and digital collections
  • Planning and delivering projects to improve archival storage, preservation, and access
  • Supporting exhibitions, programmes, and digital access initiatives that connect communities with collections
  • Working collaboratively with mana whenua, community groups, and heritage partners
  • Contributing to the delivery of Te Unua Museum of Southland, including experience development and project delivery

What you will bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in Museum Studies, Archives and Records Management, Library and Information Studies or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years' experience working in a museum, archive, library or other heritage organisation in collection activity areas, particularly with experience working with documentary, and/or photographic collections
  • Experience working in customer service, preferably in a museum, archive, library or other heritage organisation
  • Physically capable of using climbing frames and lifting boxes of a medium to heavy weight
