Senior Roading Officer
(FULL TIME | 37.5 HOURS | WAIMATE DISTRICT COUNCIL)
Waimate District Council
Turn your on-the-road experience into a role where it shapes decisions!
We're looking for a Senior Roading Officer who understands roading from the ground up.
This role is ideal for someone who is currently (or recently) working out on the roads — involved in construction, maintenance, renewals, traffic management and site delivery, and who's ready to apply that practical knowledge in a role where what really happens on site matters.
If you know how roading work is actually delivered, can spot issues early, and make sound technical judgements based on experience, we want to hear from you.
What you'll be doing:
You'll play a key role in the day‑to‑day delivery and oversight of Waimate's roading network, bringing practical, real‑world insight into both operations and planning. This includes:
- Managing and overseeing roading maintenance and renewal programmes
- Acting as Engineer's Representative on roading contracts
- Working closely with delivery teams to ensure safe, efficient and high‑quality outcomes
- Carrying out inspections and maintaining a strong understanding of network condition
- Applying practical judgement to pavement, drainage and renewal decisions
- Monitoring budgets, forecasting expenditure, and contributing to forward works programmes
- Providing technical input into corridor access, traffic management and network safety
- Responding to service requests and issues with a practical, solutions‑focused approach
- This is a hands‑on role — you'll be out on the network as well as in the office
What we're really looking for:
We're less focused on job titles, and more focused on experience and understanding. You'll likely bring:
- Strong experience in roading construction, maintenance or renewals
- A solid understanding of sealed and unsealed pavements, drainage and physical works
- Experience managing or supervising roading contracts and programmes
- Confidence working with traffic management and site safety requirements
- The ability to translate site realities into sound engineering and asset decisions
- Clear communication skills with a practical, down‑to‑earth approach
- Formal qualifications are valued, but practical roading experience is essential
You'll also need:
- A full, current NZ driver licence
- The ability and willingness to carry out regular field work
- Strong working knowledge of roading standards and contract environments
- Experience with RAMM and Microsoft Office (or similar systems)
- STMS certification and local government experience are an advantage, but not essential
