Customer Service Librarian

Whangarei District Council

Are you passionate about connecting people with knowledge and creating welcoming spaces for the community? At Whangārei District Council, our libraries are more than just books - they're hubs of learning, culture, and connection. We're looking for someone who loves helping others, thrives in a customer-focused environment, and wants to make a positive impact in our district.

About the role

As a Library Customer Service team member, you'll be the friendly face of our Central and Outreach branches, helping to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for everyone who walks through our doors. Your day‑to‑day tasks will include supporting customers with check‑ins, check‑outs, and renewals; assisting with computer and photocopying enquiries; shelving and retrieving books; responding to general queries; and handling payments.

You will also be part of our Mobile Library team, driving the Mobile Library bus and bringing our services directly to the wider community. While on the mobile run, you'll provide the same warm, professional customer support as in‑branch, ensuring a safe, accessible, and positive experience for all visitors.

Collaboration is key in this role. You'll work closely with colleagues and the public, demonstrating our organisational values of Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, and Atawhaitanga in everything you do.

Flexibility is important, as weekend work will be required as part of a roster.

About you

You're someone who genuinely enjoys connecting with people of all ages and cultures. With a friendly, intuitive approach, you can quickly read customer needs and step in to help proactively. You're confident using ICT systems and have a strong interest in knowledge, literacy, and the important role libraries play in our community.

You're comfortable being on your feet and physically active throughout the day. A full driver's licence is essential for this role, and previous experience driving larger vehicles is highly desirable.

What we offer

At Whangārei District Council, we're shaping the future of our district. Here's what makes us stand out:

  • Impactful Work: Be part of delivering essential services that directly improve community wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work alongside passionate professionals in a supportive, forward-thinking environment.
  • Lifestyle Balance: Enjoy the benefits of living in Whangārei —beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and a relaxed lifestyle—while contributing to meaningful work.
