Business Partner - People & Capability

Whangarei District Council

Are you passionate about helping people do their best work and shaping positive workplace culture? At Whangārei District Council, we're committed to building better work and better working lives. We're looking for an experienced People and Capability professional who wants to partner with others to make that happen.

About the role

As Business Partner - People and Capability, you'll provide expert advice, coaching and support across Council on a wide range of people-related matters. You'll help managers build capability and confidence, support staff in their development, and contribute to a safe, healthy and enabling workplace.

You'll lead and support recruitment, selection, and induction processes; help design and embed people policies, systems, and organisational development initiatives; and play a key role in shaping a strong performance-led culture aligned with our organisational values.

This is a collaborative, people-centred role where no two days are the same - your expertise will help drive positive change and support great outcomes for our organisation and community.

About you

You're someone who builds trust easily, works well with people from all walks of life, and empowers and brings others along on the journey. With a relevant tertiary qualification and strong experience influencing and supporting others, you bring professionalism, confidentiality and sound judgement to your work.

You're flexible, open, diplomatic, and have a natural talent for coaching and connecting with others. You enjoy partnering with managers, supporting staff, and contributing to a culture where people feel supported to grow and succeed.

What we offer

At Whangārei District Council, we're shaping the future of our district. Here's what makes us stand out:

  • Impactful Work: Be part of delivering essential services that directly improve community wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work alongside passionate professionals in a supportive, forward-thinking environment.
  • Lifestyle Balance: Enjoy the benefits of living in Whangārei —beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and a relaxed lifestyle—while contributing to meaningful work.
