Plant and Maintenance Officer - Aquatics
South Taranaki District Council
We're on the lookout for a proactive, hands‑on go‑getter to join our Aquatic Services Team in this pivotal role at the Hāwera Aquatic Centre. Join us in this full time, 40 a week role as our Plant and Maintenance Officer.
About our District - Our mission is to make our communities better and this role will play a key part in achieving this. We are located in a tranquil area of New Zealand offering some of the best access to the great outdoors. We also boast attractive housing prices for your town, village or rural lifestyle and we are within commuting distance to larger centres.
About our Organisation - STDC is a progressive, values‑driven organisation with a strong culture and a genuine "can‑do" spirit. We back our people, encourage innovation, and champion professional development. You'll enjoy a proven "best place to work" environment, flexible options, a sick‑leave bank, and a retention incentive after four years.
About the Role - As the Plant and Maintenance Officer, you'll keep our pools running smoothly—operating water treatment systems, maintaining grounds and facilities, and supporting our lifeguards. You'll ensure water quality meets NZS 5826:2010, coordinate maintenance across the Hāwera Aquatic Centre and seasonal pools, handle chemicals safely, and keep equipment in top shape. In summer you'll also help lead and support lifeguard teams, assist with training, and contribute to programmes and events. Every day, you'll play a critical role in keeping our facilities safe, welcoming, and fun.
Do you have what it takes?
You're practical, mechanically minded, and confident working with tools, systems, and water treatment processes. You're interested in how aquatic plant operations work and take pride in keeping facilities safe, clean, and running well.
You stay organised, adapt quickly to changing priorities, and are comfortable working across multiple sites. You communicate clearly, work well both independently and in a team, and contribute to a positive, customer‑focused environment.
Most importantly, you bring initiative, good judgement, and a willingness to learn and grow in a fast‑moving, hands‑on role.
Ideally you will have the following:
- Current Pool Lifeguard Practicing Certificate
- Current First Aid NZQA 6400,6401,6402
- New Zealand Certificate (Aquatics) Level 3
- Pool water treatment and operations certificate
- Clean NZ Driver's Licence
