Community Events Coordinator (Fixed term)

Whangarei District Council

Are you someone who enjoys bringing people together and helping great ideas turn into well-run community events? At Whāngarei District Council, events play an important role in connecting our communities, celebrating what makes our district unique, and creating positive shared experiences. We're looking for someone who thrives on coordination, collaboration and problem-solving, and who enjoys supporting event organizers to deliver safe, successful and inclusive events across the district.

About the role (fixed term - 12 months)

As our fixed term Community Events Coordinator, you'll be a key point of connection between Council and the community events sector, balancing Council's regulatory responsibilities with a strong focus on enabling great community experiences.

Your work will help ensure events are well supported, appropriately authorised, and delivered safely and responsibly on Council land and across the wider district.

In this role, you'll work closely with community event organisers to build strong, collaborative relationships and guide them through Council approval processes, ensuring requirements are understood and met in a practical and achievable way. You'll coordinate event applications, licensing and permits for events and markets on Council-owned land, manage temporary road closure and traffic management processes, and work alongside regulatory, safety and operational teams to ensure statutory, bylaw and policy obligations are met.

You'll also coordinate venues and equipment bookings for sponsored events and Council-led events, support the delivery of Council community events, and manage civic honour ceremonies and nomination processes.

Alongside day‑to‑day coordination, you'll maintain stakeholder information, gather feedback from organisers and internal partners, and help identify opportunities to improve how Council's event, road closure and land use processes support safe, well-run community events. You'll contribute to a customer-focused, solutions-led approach that supports compliance while enabling events to thrive across our district.

This role is a fixed term leave cover for a period of 12 months.

About you

You're an experienced events professional who enjoys working with a wide range of people and balancing multiple priorities. You bring solid event management experience, along with a sound understanding of health and safety, risk management, and working within regulatory or approval frameworks.

You're comfortable coordinating timelines, documentation and approvals, and you understand the importance of ensuring events on public land and roads are delivered safely, legally and with consideration for the wider community. Organised, practical and detail-focused, you take pride in providing clear guidance, great customer service and building positive relationships with event organisers, regulators and colleagues alike.

You're a proactive self-starter with a positive flexible approach, and you value collaboration, cultural awareness and working together to achieve great outcomes for the community.
