Roading Officer

Location: Waimate, South Canterbury
Hours: Minimum 37.5 hours per week
Salary: $78,000 - $88,000 per annum (dependent on skills and experience)
About the role:
We are seeking a practical and hands‑on Roading Officer to support the day‑to‑day monitoring and management of Waimate District Council's roading network. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys being out on site, carrying out inspections, identifying defects, and working closely with contractors to ensure work is completed safely and to standard.
This is a field‑focused role, with time split between the road network and office‑based reporting.
Key responsibilities:
- Undertake regular inspections of sealed and unsealed roads, footpaths, drainage and related infrastructure
- Identify defects, maintenance needs and safety issues, and record findings using Council systems
- Monitor contractor performance and assist with contract supervision
- Verify work completed and contractor claims against contract requirements
- Respond to customer service requests and assist with investigations
- Collect and maintain asset and condition data, including traffic counts
- Support health and safety compliance and traffic management requirements
- Provide general support to the Roading Team as required
Skills, qualifications and experience:
- You must meet one of the following minimum requirements:
- At least two years of relevant experience in roading, civil construction, infrastructure maintenance or inspections; or
- A NZQA Level 4 qualification or higher in civil engineering, infrastructure, or a related field
In addition, you will have:
- Practical knowledge of roading maintenance, pavements and drainage
- Confidence working outdoors and undertaking regular field inspections
- Strong communication and basic reporting skills
- Competency using mobile devices and standard Microsoft applications
- A Class 1 Driver Licence
- Desirable (but not essential):
- Experience in local government or contract monitoring
- Familiarity with RAMM, AWM, or similar asset systems
- STMS or traffic management experience
