Reserves Officer

(Are you passionate about parks, people, and creating vibrant community spaces? )

Selwyn District Council

About the role:

Selwyn District Council is on the hunt for a Reserves Officer—someone who can turn parks into places where the community comes alive.

You'll be the go-to person for everything reserves-related.

Hearing from our community about how to make reserves fit for purpose and places that people want to use. Getting out and about (yes, actual fresh air!) to check sites, solve problems, and organise maintenance tasks and asset renewals. Sharing updates, gathering feedback, and making sure our green spaces are loved by all.

  • Community Connector: You'll help our community enjoy our facilities and achieve aspirations.
  • On-the-Ground Guru: Visit reserves, check conditions, and make sure everything's safe and welcoming. Spot issues early and help resolve them before they become problems.
  • Getting the Job Done: Assess the condition of assets, organise and manage contractors and ensure work is completed to a high standard.
  • Voice of the People: Share Council updates, gather feedback, and champion ideas that reflect what our residents want.
  • Team Player: Work alongside the rest of the Reserves team to tackle operational problems, deliver upgrades and improvements that make a real difference.
  • A role demanding situational awareness, critical thinking, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities while maintaining service quality and safety.
  • Ranger duties: Exercise delegated enforcement authority under relevant legislation, ensuring compliance through fair and lawful decision-making.

About you:

  • You're not just looking for a job - you're looking for a role where you can make a difference. Here's what makes you perfect for this:
  • People Person: You love building relationships and helping others succeed
  • Good communication: You are a clear communicator, manage conflict with professionalism, and can use effective communication and de-escalation techniques to resolve issues in the field.
  • Problem Solver and Critical Thinker: You stay calm when issues arise, focusing on practical solutions and exercise sound judgement.
  • Organised & Reliable: You can juggle multiple tasks and keep things moving.
  • Culturally Aware: You respect diversity and embrace Te Ao Māori values.
  • Experience Counts: You've got around 3+ years in parks, reserves, or community engagement.
  • Tech & Tools: Comfortable using technology and happy to learn new systems.
  • Driver's Licence: You're ready to hit the road (and the trails!) full current license
