Whitestone Contracting is an award-winning civil construction company delivering infrastructure projects and maintenance services across the Lower South Island. With a strong reputation for quality, innovation, and looking after our people, we are seeking an experienced Health, Safety, Environment and Systems Manager to join our Senior Leadership Team.

This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role responsible for driving a positive safety culture, maintaining our integrated management systems, supporting environmental compliance, and ensuring our people go home safe every day.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CEO, you will provide leadership and guidance across all areas of health, safety, environmental management, and business systems. You will work closely with operational teams in the field, senior leaders, customers, and stakeholders to continually improve performance and ensure compliance with industry standards and legislation.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading Whitestone's health and safety strategy and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Driving a strong safety culture through coaching, engagement, and visible leadership.
• Conducting site visits, audits, observations, and incident investigations.
• Monitoring and managing critical risks across the business.
• Maintaining ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 management systems.
• Managing external audits and compliance requirements.
• Supporting environmental management and sustainability initiatives.
• Preparing performance reports for senior leadership and the Board.
• Building strong relationships with staff, customers, subcontractors, and industry partners.
• Promoting staff wellbeing and supporting organisational development initiatives.

What We're Looking For

You will be an experienced HSE professional who combines strong technical knowledge with excellent leadership and communication skills.

Ideally, you will have:

• Proven experience in a senior Health, Safety and Environment leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand health and safety legislation and best practice.
• Experience within civil construction, infrastructure, transport, or a related industry.
• Experience maintaining ISO-certified management systems.
• Excellent investigation, auditing, and risk management skills.
• The ability to influence, coach, and engage people at all levels of an organisation.
• Strong written communication and reporting skills.
• A proactive, practical approach with a genuine passion for keeping people safe.
