About the role
- Our Lifeguards play a key role in creating a fun, clean and safe environment for our community to enjoy
- Work in a large friendly team who are well-trained to respond to any emergency
- Part-time positions available in Darfield and Southbridge Pool/s
- Choose your preferred location and get the opportunity to work across any of our community pools in Selwyn when required
- All training and support are provided for you to become a NZ qualified Pool Lifeguard (which includes NZQA credits)
- We also cover the cost of your First Aid Certificate
About You
You'll be a natural when it comes to problem-solving and thinking on your feet and have the skills to communicate with a diverse range of customers. Previous experience as a lifeguard is an advantage but it's not essential as full training will be provided.
- You must have excellent Customer Services and communication skills.
- Confident in the water
- Physically fit - able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Thinks clearly and remains calm during an emergency
- Available to work shifts over summer (November 2025 to March 2026)
- At least 16years of age (or be turning 16 by the 26 September 2026) - this is a safety requirement to become a Lifeguard
The Process
If shortlisted, you'll be required to complete a swim assessment. You must be able to pass this swim assessment to progress.
The Swim test comprises of successfully completing the following:
200m continuously any stroke in less than 6 minutes
50m breaststroke
25m sidestroke
5 mins treading water
Retrieve an object form the deepest area of the Pool
- At interview we will discuss specific hours of work and check your availability
- You must be able to attend all training to be successful
- After the interview, you will be required to undertake two full days of Lifeguard training with a follow-up assessment to gain your Pool Lifeguard Qualification.
- You will also be required to attend First Aid training.
- Interviews will be held from 4 September through to 11 September 2026
- Lifeguard training will be held on 26 and 27th September 2026, at Selwyn Aquatic Centre
- First Aid training will be held on 29 September and 30 September 2026 at Selwyn Aquatic Centre
- Lifeguard Assessments will be held on 1 October 2026, at Selwyn Aquatic Centre
- Shadowing shifts (up to 20 hours) will be required between 2nd to 11th October 2026
- Pools open 14 November 2026
