Maintenance Engineer

Apparelmaster Christchurch operates a large commercial laundry facility in Sockburn, supplying linen and uniforms across Christchurch and surrounding regions. Our modern plant features European‑engineered automated laundry equipment, including high‑capacity ironers, automated folding machines, and solvent dry‑cleaning systems. Production volumes fluctuate seasonally, and maintaining reliable, efficient equipment is essential to supporting our team and meeting client expectations.

We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and skilled Maintenance Engineer to join our continuous improvement programmes. This role focuses on preventative maintenance, equipment reliability, and supporting upgrades across our mechanical and electrical systems.

This is a full‑time, permanent position. Hours are Monday to Friday, with start/finish times negotiable. Some overtime or weekend work may be required to maintain plant operation. Over summer time it is considered essential you can work through with statutory holidays off. Competitive remuneration will be offered to the right applicant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve reliability of all plant equipment — mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and steam systems.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance routines and inspections across the facility.
  • Maintain and repair:
    • Large commercial ironers (double‑roll king‑size sheet ironers)
    • 180kg dry‑cleaning machine
    • Automatic towel and garment folding machines
    • Boilers and steam distribution systems
  • Identify and report abnormal equipment conditions so maintenance can be scheduled.
  • Troubleshoot faults and carry out repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Work with PLCs, sensors, and HMIs:
    • Basic PLC fault‑finding
    • Understanding of machine settings and operational parameters
    • Familiarity with common industrial sensors (temperature, pressure, proximity, pneumatic valves)
  • Use our online maintenance system (MEX) to record tasks, plan future work, and manage parts inventory.
  • Contribute to our upcoming Major Expansion projects
  • Work collaboratively with contractors, suppliers, and the in‑house engineering team.
  • Training will be provided for our unique industry machines.

Skills and Experience

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a maintenance engineering role.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in:
    • Industrial machinery
    • Steam systems and boilers
    • Pneumatics
    • Automated equipment
  • Basic electrical knowledge (certified electrical work performed by contractors).
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Good understanding of PLCs, HMIs, and associated sensors (basic programming not required).
  • Welding skills beneficial
  • Strong fitting, fabrication, and general workshop organizational skills.
  • Well‑organized, detail‑focused, and able to prioritize tasks effectively i.e. deferred vs essential vs operator maintenance
  • Basic lathe and mill machining.
  • Not all skills are essential as on the job training can be provided
  • Must be safety-conscious and committed to following safe work practices.
