Renewals Lead (Transportation)
Whangarei District Council
At Whangarei District Council, we're investing in the infrastructure that keeps our communities connected, safe and thriving. As our district continues to grow, we're looking for a capable and motivated Renewals Lead to join our Transportation team and play a key role in delivering our road renewals programme.
This is an opportunity to make a real impact, leading projects that improve essential transport assets while working alongside a collaborative, forward-thinking team.
The Opportunity
As Renewals Lead, you'll oversee the planning and delivery of road renewal projects across the district, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard. You'll work with contractors, consultants and internal stakeholders to manage projects from procurement through to completion, balancing technical requirements, budgets, timelines and customer outcomes.
This role combines project leadership, stakeholder management, commercial oversight, and technical problem-solving, making it ideal for someone who enjoys seeing projects through from concept to completion.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the delivery of roading and pavement renewal projects
- Managing professional service and physical works contracts
- Coordinating consultants, contractors, and external suppliers
- Reviewing designs, technical documentation, and project recommendations
- Monitoring budgets, expenditure, and project performance
- Providing oversight of the district reseal programme
- Identifying opportunities to improve processes, quality, and service delivery
- Ensuring projects meet customer, safety, and regulatory requirements
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an experienced project delivery professional who can confidently lead infrastructure renewals programmes and build strong relationships across contractors, consultants and stakeholders.
You may have developed your expertise in civil engineering, transport, construction, utilities, infrastructure, asset management or a related industry, but you'll bring the commercial, technical and leadership capability needed to successfully deliver projects.
We're keen to hear from people who bring:
- Experience delivering infrastructure, roading, construction or capital works projects
- Strong contract management and procurement experience, including working with and building trusted relationships with external consultants and contractors
- Commercial acumen with proven ability to manage project budgets, risks, timelines, and performance outcomes
- Confidence reviewing and interpreting technical information and making informed decisions
- Excellent communication and report-writing abilities including presenting recommendations
- A practical, solutions-focused approach with a high attention to detail and proactive approach to problem solving
- The confidence to work autonomously while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment
Ideally, you will hold a qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline and bring experience in transport infrastructure, pavement renewals, asset management or construction delivery. However, we also welcome applications from professionals with equivalent experience gained through other infrastructure or project-based environments
