This is an exciting opportunity for a technically capable and people-focused leader to join our Building Assurance team and play a vital role in ensuring safe, sustainable and compliant buildings for our community.
About the Role
As Team Leader - Building Consents, you'll provide leadership to a team of Building Technical Officers responsible for processing building consent applications and assessing compliance with the New Zealand Building Code. You'll ensure high-quality, timely decision-making while supporting continuous improvement, customer service excellence, and the ongoing success of Council's Building Consent Authority accreditation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading, mentoring, and developing a high-performing processing team
- Managing consent allocation and workflow to meet statutory timeframes
- Ensuring consistent, accurate, and legally compliant consent processing
- Driving process improvements and service efficiencies
- Supporting quality assurance, competency development, and auditing activities
- Providing expert technical advice to applicants, stakeholders, and colleagues
- Building strong relationships across Council and the wider development sector
- Contributing to strategic initiatives and organisational improvement
What You'll Bring
We're looking for someone who combines technical expertise with strong leadership capability.
You'll have:
- A Level 6 Diploma in Building Control Surveying or an equivalent recognised qualification applicable to building design and construction building qualification
- At least five years' senior experience within a Building Consent Authority or the building design and construction industry
- Proven experience processing complex residential and commercial building consent applications
- Strong leadership, coaching, and people management skills
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and building standards
- Excellent communication and stakeholder relationship skills
- A customer-focused approach and commitment to continuous improvement.
