Emergency Management Southland is seeking a motivated Summer Student to help enhance our GIS systems and mapping tools that support emergency preparedness, response, and recovery across Southland.
You'll work with the EMS team to research, gather, and map key information, developing new GIS layers and improving existing ones. This is a hands-on opportunity to apply your GIS skills to real-world challenges while contributing to community resilience.
We're looking for someone who:
- Is studying GIS, geography, planning, environmental science, or a related field.
- Enjoys problem-solving and working with data.
- Can think independently and manage their own work.
- Has a keen eye for presenting information in a practical and user-friendly way.
Support and guidance will be provided, but an element of self-thinking and self-management is required.
Spend your summer building valuable GIS experience while helping Southland prepare for emergencies.
This position is available from November 2026 - February 2027. You are eligible to apply if you are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution or have graduated this year. All Summer Student roles are offered at a rate of $29.90 per hour and a 37.5-hour week.
