Maritime Assistant x2
Environment Southland
As a Maritime Assistant, you will support our maritime team by engaging with the public, promoting safe boating and gathering information from water users. Much of the role will be based at boat ramps around Southland, primarily at Bluff, the Ōreti River, Riverton and Te Anau. Some overnight stays in Te Anau will be required.
The work is weather-dependent, so plans and locations may change at short notice. We will generally focus on areas where the weather is expected to be best and boating activity is likely to be highest, so you need to be flexible about where and when you work.
You will conduct surveys, distribute boating safety information and encourage people to enjoy Southland's waterways safely. The role will also include office-based data entry and other supporting tasks.
This position would suit a reliable and mature person who is confident speaking with a wide range of people. Ideally, you will have some experience around boats or water recreation, a love of the outdoors and a genuine interest in helping others stay safe on the water.
This is a part-time role of between 20 and 30 hours per week. The role will include weekends and public holidays. Hours will generally be between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm, although some days may require a start as early as 6:00 am.
This position is available from 30 November 2026 - 15 January 2027. You are eligible to apply if you are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution or have graduated this year. All Summer Student roles are offered at a rate of $29.90 per hour.
Please upload your CV and cover letter. Your cover letter will be a key part of our assessment process, so please highlight how your experience relates to the key skills required for this role.
