Whangārei District Council is looking for an Asset Manager - Data (Transportation) to join our Transportation team.
This role is responsible for managing the data and systems that underpin transport asset planning and investment decisions across the district. You'll help ensure we have accurate, reliable information to support the maintenance, renewal, and future development of our transport network.
We're looking for someone who is equally comfortable working with data, systems, and people. You may come from an asset management, engineering, infrastructure, information systems, or data analytics background and enjoy finding smarter ways to use information to improve outcomes.
What you'll be doing | You'll be responsible for ensuring our transportation asset data is accurate, accessible, and fit for purpose.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and maintaining Council's transportation asset database and ensuring high-quality asset information is collected, validated, and maintained.
- Leading data improvement initiatives that strengthen the quality and reliability of transportation asset information.
- Providing advice on asset management systems, processes, and best practice.
- Supporting the development and continuous improvement of the Transportation Activity Management Plan.
- Developing and monitoring performance measures for maintenance and renewals programmes.
- Managing the transport asset vesting process associated with new developments and public works projects.
- Providing strategic advice on asset data maturity and opportunities for system improvement.
- Supporting long-term transport planning, including renewal forecasting, condition assessments, and optimisation of investment programmes.
- Assisting with asset valuations, depreciation, audit reporting, and NZTA reporting requirements.
- Maintaining transport network models that support evidence-based decision making.
- Working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure transportation data meets organisational and regulatory needs.
This role offers a combination of data management, strategic planning, and continuous improvement, giving you the opportunity to contribute to how transportation infrastructure is planned and managed across the district.
What we're looking for | We're looking for someone who can combine technical expertise with strong analytical thinking and relationship-building skills.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- A degree-level qualification in Engineering, Asset Management, Information Systems, ICT, or a related discipline.
- Experience managing and optimising complex asset management systems such as RAMM, AWM, Hansen, or similar platforms.
- A strong understanding of asset management principles and how quality data supports sound investment decisions.
- Experience with life-cycle planning, asset condition assessments, intervention levels, and deterioration modelling.
- Knowledge of asset valuation, depreciation, budgeting, and long-term planning processes.
- Experience using Power BI or similar reporting and analytics tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
- The ability to communicate complex technical information to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Excellent relationship management skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
- Strong organisational skills and a high attention to detail.
Experience working within local government, infrastructure, transportation, or other complex asset-intensive organisations would be highly regarded.
